If you’re someone who prefers sandy beaches over crowded holiday parties, Playa del Carmen is the warm-weather escape you’ve been looking for. I visited around the New Year holiday of 2025, and instead of confetti and fireworks, I traded winter coats for swimsuits and celebrated the season soaking up Mexico’s Caribbean sunshine. What drew me to Playa del Carmen was simple: it offered a more affordable alternative to Cancun and Tulum, yet its central location made it easy to enjoy excursions in both cities without long drives or complicated planning.
After landing at Cancun International Airport, I used Happy Shuttle for my transfer — a service I booked online weeks in advance for peace of mind. My Airbnb,Miranda Condos, was perfectly positioned just steps from Mamitas Beach, making it easy to dip into the ocean anytime I wanted. Surrounded by restaurants, beach clubs, convenience stores, and pharmacies all within walking distance, it was the ideal home base for a stress-free vacation.
My first excursion took me to Tulum for a photo tour I booked on Viator. We visited iconic stops like the Tulum sign, Escultura Ven a la Luz, Cenote Atik, and Villa Pescadore Beach Club. Professional photographers accompanied us the entire time, capturing stunning shots at every location. The next day was one for the books: a private tour of Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After an early morning pickup and a two-hour drive, I stood in awe of its perfectly preserved architecture — a moment I’ll never forget.
When I returned to Playa del Carmen, I spent the evening exploring Fifth Avenue, the lively pedestrian street filled with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and street performers. The following afternoon I visited Parque Los Fundadores, a vibrant cultural hub near the beach where I watched the Danza de los Voladores — an incredible ceremonial performance. The ferry terminal to Cozumel is also located here, making it a great spot for planning day trips to the nearby island.
On my final day, I ended the trip with a breathtaking underwater photo shoot at Cenote Cristalino. Floating beneath crystal-clear waters while surrounded by ancient limestone formations felt surreal — the perfect closing chapter to a trip full of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. Playa del Carmen gave me everything I wanted from a warm-weather holiday escape and more.
